Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or substitute almond/oat milk)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or milk (for frosting)
  • Additional cocoa powder for frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Slowly combine dry ingredients with wet mixture; stir gently to avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide the batter between prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder while mixing in heavy cream until fluffy.
  8. Assemble the cake by layering with frosting in between the cakes and on top.
